American Revolutionary War 12-pounder mortar shell with wooden base, found in Philadelphia, 1777. 3252 grams total, 2761 grams for shell, 4-1/2" diameter. Mortar shells called "bombs" in early accounts were fired out of mortars called "coehorns" after their inventor, and shells up to twelve pounds in size were used on ships as grenades during boarding actions, filled with powder and ignited with a wooden fuse driven into the hole in the shell. This example was found near the site of Fort Mifflin on the Delaware River and has been conserved and well preserved, the iron stable and solid, with a lightly aged pitted surface.
