John VII, nephew of Manuel II, usurped the Byzantine throne from his uncle and grandfather John V in April 1390, sitting for just 5 months before Manuel re-captured Constantinople. John was later re-instated as regent in 1399 -1402 whilst Manuel was away in Western Europe.
