Spanish Medieval Æ Seal Matrix. Seville, circa 15th century. In the name of Gonzalo Perez. Flat circular matrix with raised rib and pierced lug on reverse. The central device of the die is a single-masted cog (ship) within a dotted circular border. Viewing an impression the cog is facing right, and is shown with both a forecastle and sterncastle, standing rigging, a furled sail, and a pennant streaming from the masthead. Around this is an inscription reading +S GONZALO PEREZ, which translates as "Seal of Gonzalo Perez", the 'S' being an abbreviation for Sigillum, the Latin word for seal. The legend is enclosed within a further dotted border. 19.14g, 28mm.
Condition as seen. Attractive patina.
Ex Sevillian private collection.
