Time of the Severans Æ Gaming Token (?). Designed and cut from an Æ17 of Philippopolis, Thrace. AD 193-235. Obverse erased and engraved with star design / ΦΙΛ[ΙΠΠΟΠ]ΟΛEΙΤΩΝ, tripod, with serpent entwined around central leg and emerging above the bowl from the left. Cf. Varbanov 1329 (S. Severus) for rev. type. 3.37g, 17mm.
Very Fine. Rare; it is unusual to see a provincial coin thus altered.
