Diocletian Æ Quinarius. Siscia, AD 294-295. DIOCLETIANVS AVG, laureate head right / VTILITAS PVBLICA, Utilitas standing facing, head left, with hands folded within drapery; SIS in exergue. RIC -, cf. Rome 48 (R in ex.) & Ticinum 27a (T in ex.). 1.10g, 15mm, 12h.
Very Fine. Rev. somewhat corroded. Seemingly unpublished in the standard references.
Known from the mints of Rome and Ticinum, the types seen on this quinarius had not until now been thought to have been struck at Siscia at all. Indeed, RIC lists only laureate fractions for Maximian and Galerius as having been struck at this mint, with reverse types of Mars and Aequitas (though this latter bears the same rev. legend) as the present piece). That we have now this reverse type represented at Siscia should come as little surprise.
