Augustus. Denarius; Augustus; 27 BC-14 AD, as Octavian, Italian Mint?, 36-27 BC, Denarius, 3.75g. RIC-272 (C ); BM-638; Paris-92; C-117 (5 Fr.); Sear, Imperators-424. Obv: Laureate head of Apollo r. Rx: IMP CAESAR in exergue, Octavian, as city founder, togate and veiled, plowing r. with yoke of oxen, holding whip in l. hand. NGC 4280823-01. Sear, following K. Kraft, relates this type to "the foundation of Nicopolis in Epirus [in 29 BC], on a site close to Octavian's military camp during the Actian campaign". A pre-Actian dating with general reference to the settlement of veterans in newly founded colonies seems more likely (D. Mannsperger, Die Münzprägung des Augustus, Saeculum Augustum III, p. 370 with note 51).. EF
