Septimius Severus, obv. legend error (letter omitted). Denarius; Septimius Severus, obv. legend error (letter omitted); 193-211 AD, New-style Eastern Mint, 198-9 AD, Denarius, 2.59g. C-19 (citing a coin in Paris, which is from the same obv. die as ours), BMC-p. 63, RIC-p. 103, † note. Obv: L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI ART MAX (sic) Head laureate r. Rx: AEQVITA - TI AVGG Aequitas standing l. holding scales and cornucopia. From the Philip Ashton Collection, ex Berk 132, 14 May 2003, lot 460. Cohen-19 read the obverse legend on the Paris specimen of this coin as IMP X PART, but BMC and RIC pointed out that the correct reading seemed to be IMP XI ART: the engraver left out the P of PART. This error was overlooked when our specimen, from the same obverse die, first appeared in Berk 132, 2003, but it was noticed by the collector who purchased the coin, Philip T. Ashton. Rare and interesting obverse legend error, perhaps only the second specimen recorded.. MS
