Elagabalus (218-222 AD). Denarius; Elagabalus (218-222 AD); Rome, 220 AD, Denarius, 2.92g. BM-199, C-19 (2 Fr.), RIC-63. Obv: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG Bust laureate, draped r. Rx: CONSERVATOR - AVG Sol advancing l., star in l. field. From the Philip Ashton Collection, ex Berk 137, 31 March 2004, lot 383. Scarce: 11 specimens in Reka Devnia hoard. The title "Preserver of the Emperor", which also accompanies the type Stone of Emesa in Quadriga on an aureus, shows that the Greco-Roman sun god not only on this denarius, but also on the common similar denarii of Elagabalus with dated reverse legends of 219-221 AD, must represent the emperor's Syrian god Elagabalus..
