Hadrian. AE 24; Hadrian; 117-138 AD, Philippopolis, Thrace, AE 24, 9.36g. Rev. type var. of RPC-749. Obv: A?PIANOC - CEBACTOC Bare-headed, draped bust r. Rx: FI?I??O?O - ?EITON Apollo, nude apart from drapery hanging from l. shoulder, standing l., holding patera in r. hand and branch downwards in l. This variant with Apollo holding a branch rather than two arrows in his lowered left hand is not in RPC, though Vabanov 629-30 reports such a reverse type combined with two different (laureate) bust types, citing Mouchmov's monograph on the ancient coins of Philippopolis, nos. 16 and 17.It is quite rare for a provincial bronze coin to bear such a magnificent Roman portrait.
