Diadumenian as Caesar. Dupondius; Diadumenian as Caesar; 217-218 AD, Rome, Dupondius, 10.67g. BM 159, C-8 (20 Fr.), RIC-212. Obv: [OPEL ANTON]INVS DIADVMENIANVS CAES Bare-headed, draped bust r., seen from front. Rx: PRINC IVVENTVTIS S - C Diadumenian standing l., head r., holding standard and scepter, behind him two further standards. A dupondius rather than an As, since a spot of yellow rather than red metal is visible on Diadumenian's torso on the reverse. Dupondii of Macrinus are considerably rarer than asses, and the same doubtless applies to Diadumenian too, though for him the two denominations are distinguished only by metal color, not typologically.Exceptional portrait.
