Kings of Egypt. Ptolemy XII Neo Dionysos (Auletes, restored (55-51 BC). AR Tetradrachm. Alexandria, regnal year 27 (55/54 BC). 13.66 gms. Diademed Ptolemy head r., wearing aegis around neck, rev. Eagle standing l., palm over shoulder, atop thunderbolt, date LKI above Isis headdress in left field, ΠA in right. Svoronos 1836, SNG Copenhagen 394. With a bribe of 6,000 talents into the coffers of Julius Caesar and Pompey, Ptolemy XII, nicknamed "Auletes" (the flute player), forged a formal alliance in 59 BC with Rome. His name was inscribed onto the list of friends and allies of the people of Rome. And to Rome he fled the next year, fleeing an Alexandrian mob angered over his inaction after Rome's conquest of Cyprus. Auletes was only able to recover his throne in 55 BC by paying Roman general Aulus Gabinius 10,000 talents to invade Egypt. In 51 BC, he fell ill and made his daughter Cleopatra co-regent. Toned.
