Crusaders. Kingdom of Jerusalem. Baldwin III-Amalric (1143-1174). Small Cut Gold Fragment. 0.48 gm. Partial Latin legends: --DOI- / ornamental pseudo-Arabic. Braided inner circle / Arabic legend: ayn del--- in inner circle. Cf.Metcalf LE 240ff; J.D. The Crusaders cut down and used various gold coins, generally Sicilian Tarì and Islamic gold. More exceptional are the cut pieces with Latin legends which were made under Baldwin III and Amalric. It is believed that the Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem specifically minted gold coins with Latin legends which were then immediately cut for circulation as bullion.There are no known examples of an intact entire coin. The only evidence for these gold issues are these fragments. The noted Islamic numismatist George C. Miles was able to reconstruct coins of two types, one of which was minted by Amalric (1163-1174).
