CSA, T-23, $10, September 2, 1861, Cr-153, PF-1. No. 5759. A. Red TEN underprint. Plain paper. John E. Ward, left. Cotton wagon, center. "The Corn Gatherer, right. Uncirculated. Light teller handling. Very Fine details. A small piece is missing from the left side, and there is a skillfully repaired tear in the right side. The nearly full margins, vivid red underprints, and the attractive overall appearance of this note make it a great candidate for professional restoration. Portraits and vignettes on bank notes almost always have a connection to the institutions that issue them, or they symbolize the values shared by those institutions. Before the War Between the States, CSA Treasury official had the luxury of ordering notes customized to their particular needs. Once the War broke out they sometimes were forced to settle for anything they could get their hands on. In this case, vignettes from the Mechanics Savings Bank of Savannah were pressed into use. John E. Ward, one time president of the Mechanics Savings Bank, was vehemently opposed to secession, and eventually moved to New York City to practice law. He would not be the only abolitionist portrayed on a Confederate bank note (see the following note)..
