Superior Auction, Aug.1983. Lot 54. In a series of different dies what starts as a tree on the first coins, eventually morphs into an eagle as on this coin. The coin recounts the story of Europa and the bull. Zeus became enthralled with the beautiful Europa and came to her in the form of a white bull. Europa climbed onto the back of the bull which waded into the water. Europa was too afraid to dismount as the water deepened and is carried on the back of the bull (Zeus) across the Mediterranean to Crete. There, Zeus transforms back to his human form an finishes his seduction under a cypress tree. Europa becomes queen of Crete and the children of this union include Minos, who later becomes King of Crete himself.
