AEOLIS, Temnos. C. Asinius Gallus, Proconsul of Asia, 6-5 BC. Æ17 (3.06 gm) Bare head of Gallus / Dionysos wearing ivy-wreath. RPC.2447. SNG.Cop.276. aVF, dark green patina. Rare and Interesrting. Galius was a friend of Augustus who granted him the honor of striking this coin with his own portrait. Galius was a enemy of Tiberius which started when he married Tiberuis' former wife, who Tiberius was forced to divorce to marry Julia for political reasons. Galius conrinued to confront Tiberius in the Senate under Augustis. Ultimately, when Tiberius became emperor he had his revenge on Galius by arresting him and letting him starve to death in prison.
