The medal is that unusual combination of a respected sitter by a respected sculptor. Emerson had been honoured by the Royal Photographic Society with a major retrospective exhibition in 1900. James Havard Thomas (1854–1921) was a Welsh sculptor active in London and Capri. He was the first Chairman of Sculpture at the Slade School of Art in London.
