Awabai Bhownaggree was the much loved sister of Sir Mancherjee Merwanjee Bhownaggree (1851-1933), the second Indian to be elected a British Member of Parliament. The medal was awarded between 1890-1892 to the top girl in the matriculation exams, and from 1893 it was funded by a grant and the dies were given to the school. Bhownaggree also funded a Memorial Hall in her name. The school is now the Alexandra Girls' English Institution. For further information see John McLeod, Mourning, Philanthropy an M. M. Bhownaggree's Road to Parliament, Oxford and New York, 2008.
