House of Saxony or Ottonian dynasty (919-1024)
Otto II (?)

Denaro scodellato, Venice, Otto II (973-983) (?) or Otto I (962-973)?, AR 1.28 g. + OTO IMPERATOR Cross with pellet in each quarter. Rev. Blundered legend. Temple with two columns: cross above and inside. cf. CNI (Milano) 2. cf. Murari 1981, note 9. Paolucci –.About extremely fine

After Grierson studies (cf. MEC 1), this type of ‘scodellate’ coins, previously attributed to Milan, are now attributed to Venice. It is More difficult to attribute this specimen to a specific Emperor Otto (I or II or III). Castellani 1923 and 1925 published a specimen with legend venecia across temple on the reverse attributing it to Otto II or III (973-1002), and if we accept it, this specimen must be certainly earlier.
