Anonymous issues of Lower Lotharingia
Denier. Brussels, formerly Breisach, AR 1.27 g. +IOTTO[DGRAIMP] (blundered) Cross with crosslet in second quarter, E in third, and the other quarters void. Rev. S / BRIISI / A / across field following the Cologne model.Very rare. Very fine
According to Dannenberg 905, the mint name on the reverse refers to Breisach but recent research suggested a possible attribution to Bruxelles, as stated in Künker 175, 2010, 2098 (this lot), from which we quote, translating: “The design is clearly based on the type S / COLONIA / A and the mint Cologne is well placed in the area of Lower Lotharingia. As a possibility the mint might be Bruxelles from the name on the reverse. The date of the issue can be placed in the first half of the eleventh century under Count Lambert of Louvain (994-1015) (see U. Klein, ‘Die Münzprägung im südwestlichen Schwaben. Stand und Aufgaben der Forschung’, in B. Kluge (ed.), Fernhandel und Geldwirtschaft, Sigmaringen 1993, p. 104 and 109, pl. 4 no. 60)”.
