Provenance: Spink Auction 101, 24 November 1993, lot 100.
A royal mint at York was in operation (first at the Castle, then in St Leonard's Hospital) from May 1545 until October 1549, under the supervision of George Gale. Although no shillings were struck at York, dies were produced bearing the mintmaster's inital g. These were never sent north and were later used at the Tower overstruck with the current arrow mark and at Southwark where the g is overpunched with a y (cf. DNW 143, lot 975)
