Anonymous. 211-210 BC. Æ Sextans (23mm, 5.48 g, 3h). Corn-ear (third) series. Mint in Sicily. Head of Mercury right, wearing winged petasus; [•] • (mark of value) above / Prow of galley right; grain ear above, [••] (mark of value) below. Crawford 72/8; Sydenham 195d; Type as RBW 311. VF, dark green and brown patina, some roughness on obverse.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex JD Collection (Part III, Numismatica Ars Classica 78, Part II, 27 May 2014), lot 1614; Goodman Collection (Triton I, 2 December 1997), lot 912.

See my note for the Crawford 42/2 quadrans earlier in this sale, which also discusses this coin. It is not clear if this sextans is an overstrike. Obverse issues suggest it might be, but the reverse is an absolutely clear strike in close to as-made condition. This coin may reflect obverse strike problems or die damage. The prow is exceptionally clear and in a very typical style for this issue. [Andrew McCabe]
