The Triumvirs. Octavian. 35/4 BC. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.74 g, 9h). Spanish or northern Italian or mint traveling with Octavian in Illyricum. Bare head right / Round shield with three concentric rows of studs and central boss. CRI 392; RIC I 543a; RSC 126 (Augustus); RBW –. Good VF, lightly toned, a few marks and some light porosity. Rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 106 (Part II, 10 May 2018), lot 1325.

These Spanish shield types of Octavian are scarce in decent condition, being invariably offstruck on their reverses and often affected by soil conditions. This example has a remarkably fine and high relief portrait of Octavian for the type, and is quite complete. [Andrew McCabe]
