AUSTRALIA, souvenir matchbox made of timber from the keelson of convict transport ship George III wrecked in D'Entrecasteaux Channel close to the mouth of the Derwent River in Tasmania in 1835, together with printed information sheet on the details of the George III and the wreck. Very fine.
Made from part of the ship's keelson which runs the length of the ship and is used to fasten timbers or plates of the floor to the keel. One part of the keelson is built into the Tower and is the main support of the flagstaff at Government House, Hobart and another part was used to make mementoes such as the one above.
