BRITISH AND COLONIAL CHEQUES, Victorian and Edwardian issues, 1887-early 1900s, Gurneys, Birkbek, Barclay, Buxton & Creswell Bank at King's Lynn, five cheques issued between 16 March and 15 December 1887, drawn by Plowright & Pratt (later named Plowright, Pratt and Harbage), some with bank stampings on front and endorsements on back and all with impressed one penny duty stamp; also an unissued cheque with stub attached for The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited, Germiston, with vignette at left edge, number A34474 and with a Transvaal Edward VII one penny duty stamp affixed. Fine - extremely fine. (6)

King's Lynn is a seaport and market town in Norfolk, England. Also known as Lynn Regis and Lincolnshire Bank, the Lynn Bank was opened as a separate branch of Gurney and Company in 1782. Offices were opened at Swaffham in 1807 and Downham Market in 1810. In 1896 the bank amalgamated with Barclay & Co Ltd.

Germiston is in Gauteng Province in the Witwatersrand in the heart of the Rand goldfields. It was founded in 1886 after the discovery of gold and became a town in 1903. In 1950 it became a city and is one of South Africa's most heavily industrialised areas.
