Annam
Tu Duc gold Tien ND (1848-1883) MS61 NGC, cf. KM413, S&H-3.22.10. Obv. Sun with petal rays in center, with characters 1 Tien and "Viet Tu" (benignity) with surrounding dragon. Rev. Sun with petal rays in center, scalloped and beaded design around the rim, and four characters, "Thong Buu" and reign. An utterly beautiful and fleeting treasure. This smaller denomination is vastly more elusive than its larger counterparts and this particular specimen is ideally struck and glows with aurous allure. There is what appears to be a tiny crescent shaped chopmark on the reverse, noted for completeness, but this in no way deters from the undeniable appeal of this fantastic piece.
