China
Southern Song Dynasty ND (1127-1279) silver Tax Sycee of 50 Taels ND AU (Scratches), 1799.29gm, 61x151mm. An extremely elusive tax ingot in the "axe-head" shape commonly used during the Jing and Southern Song Dynasties. The two most common excises of the period were the Ex-Gate Tax--an in-land customs tax--and the Salt Tax--one of the major sources of income for the Jing Dynasty, though the former was more commonly evaluated in 25 Tael sycee. The stamps are moreover finely and clearly executed, clearly formed by a stamp rather than the more common practice of being hand cut. The piece itself shows rather light signs of wear, a few scattered scratches noted for the sake of completeness, but rather insignificant when considering its great rarity.
