China
Hubei (Hupeh) Dabao ("Large") Sycee of 50 Taels ND AU, Qing Dynasty, 1861.02gm, 56x140mm, Cribb-Class XV. Stamped "Hu Bei" once, "Shang Hai" once, "Nan Jing" twice, and "Xiang Gang" (Hong Kong) twice, with two added ink marks of uncertain meaning. A most puzzling and apparently widely traveled piece, displaying a pleasing symmetrically stamped layout with the names of all of the places of manufacture recorded by Cribb. It would appear closest to variety E, although the inscription appears divided into 6 rather than 5 sections, and merely repeats the name of numerous locales rather than stating that it is "of Treasury standard". The overall quality of manufacture is, moreover, superb for the general rarity of the type, a few earthen deposits visible in the recessed regions of the stamps, but next to no serious imperfections or signs of handling.
