World War I Medals (4) the first awarded to 4751 Pte.J.Dowling 1st Leinster Regiment VF. Pte.Dowling died of wounds in France 15/5/1915 and is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery VIII. D.7., the second awarded to 8841 Pte.A.Mawhenney 2nd Irish Guards (Mawhinney on CWGC website). EF. died 31/7/1917 buried Ypres, Menin Gate, Belgium (Panel 11), the third awarded to 8890 Pte.F.C.Brown 2nd Kings Own Royal Lancashire Regiment. NEF. Pte. Brown was born in Ahmednagar, India enlisted in Winchester, UK, and was killed in action 8/5/1915 at the second Battle of Ypres. This battle is the first recorded use of poison gas on the Western Front, and over 300 men were killed in the last German assault on Frezenberg, He is buried ay Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Panel 12, the fourth awarded to Capt. J.M.Fonseca R.A.M.C, First Welsh Field Ambulance, 53rd Welsh Division, served in Gallipoli 1914. NEF. The 53rd Welsh Division landed at Sulva Bay 8/8/1915, with only three officers, and after 4 months became part of the Suez Canal Defence Force.
