Choice Mint State. From the Mayflower Collection. Acquired from Victor England, 1986.In classical mythology, the Calydonian boar was sent by Diana (Artemis) to ravage the region of Calydon in Aetolia because its King Oeneus neglected to properly honor her. While mostly male heroes participated in the hunt, the heroine, Atalanta, won its hide by being the first to wound it with an arrow. The choice of type presumably commemorates an event of one of the moneyer's more illustrious ancestors, but the details are not known to us.
