L. Aemilius Lepidus Paullus (62 BC). AR denarius (20mm, 3.92 gm, 6h). Rome. PAVLLVS LEPIDVS behind, CONCORDI[A] before, veiled and diademed head of Concordia right / TER above, PAVLLVS in exergue, the consul, L. Aemilius Paullus, togate, standing left, erecting trophy; to left, the Macedonian king, Perseus, and his sons standing right. Crawford 415/1. Sydenham 926. Aemilia 10. Attractive light gray toning with much luster. Superb Extremely Fine. From The Mayflower Collection. The reverse portrays the moneyer's ancestor, the consul Lucius Aemilius Paullus, who defeated King Perseus of Macedon at Pydna in 168 BC, thus ending the Third Macedonian War in 168 BC and effectively ending Hellenistic Macedonia as a state. The previous consuls whom Rome had sent to subdue the Macedonians were untried in military command and completely ineffective, and it was only Perseus' persistent lack of military intelligence that prevented a total rout of the Roman legions. Matters changed with the arrival of Aemilius Paullus on the scene, as he was an experienced commander who had fought extensively in the Hanniballic Wars. After the defeat of Macedon, he went on to conquer Epirus, laying waste 70 of its towns and taking 150,000 captives as slaves. Back in Rome he was awarded a splendid triumph, and the Senate awarded him the title of Macedonicus.

Estimate: 500.00-700.00 USD
