Anastasius II, the secretary of his predecessor Philippicus, was raised to the purple after the latter's downfall and did much to restore the Byzantine position in both military and religious matters before being deposed himself by yet another short-lived pretender, Theodosius III. Compelled to enter a monastery, he bided his time for awhile and tried to lead a coup against Leo III, but failed and was executed.
