Joao VI (as King) gold 6400 Reis 1822-R, KM328, AU58 NGC, nicely struck with lustrous surfaces, an extremely rare date with a listed mintage of 599. Struck in the year of Brazil's Independence from Portugal, this coin is listed simply a "RRR" or "Rare" in most reference catalogs.Dom Joao VI reigned during quite a turbulent period (1799 - 1826) and never saw lasting peace. Spain, France and Great Britain all were involved in conflicts with Portugal during this time. The culmination of which was the escape of the King to Brazil in 1808 due to the Napoleonic invasions. His marital affairs were no less troublesome as his wife Carlota Joaquina of Spain, frequently conspired against the King, often for the benefit of her native Spain.In 1822, Joao VI lost Brazil after his son declared independence of Portugal's most important and rich colonial possession. A couple of years later, his other son Miguel (later King Miguel I of Portugal) led a rebellion with the objective of deposing the ruling King. Joao died in 1826 and according to recent research, he may have been killed by arsenic poisoning.
