Edward III (1327-77) gold Noble ND, S-1504, N-1235 (rare), Treaty Period (1361/3-69) with the title of the Duke of Aquitaine in obverse legend, Calais mint with "C" in center of reverse, flag at stern of ship, MS63 NGC, an excellent lustrous specimen, pebbly obverse die, broad flan with clear legends all around and wide outer rims, bold strike showing numerous tiny details of the designs, no surface marks or problems. It is fairly common to find choice London issues but not so much for the Calais issues. The Latin legend used on all Nobles first appeared on this king's coinage, "IESUS AUTEM TRANSIENS PER MEDIUM ILLORUM IBAT, normally abbreviated, meaning "But Jesus, passing through the midst of them, went His way." Not only was this saying from the Psalms about devotion but it also served to pronounce or advertise a common religious allegiance with trading partners abroad because these first large English gold coins were manufactured primarily to promote the wool trade with the Continent. From The Marston Collection of British Coins.

Estimate: 8000.00-10000.00 USD
