Charles II gold Elephant & Castle-hallmark 5 Guineas 1684, S-3332, 2nd Bust, VF30 NGC, pleasing overall with some ancient abrasions but no abuse seen on either side, well worn, designs nicely centered and well outlined, rims without bruises. Very scarce. The hallmark "Elephant & Castle" seen under the king's portrait was taken from the badge of The Africa Company. England had little native gold, and beginning in the 1660s gold was imported from what became known as the Gold Coast of Africa, rich in minerals.
