George I Halfcrown 1723-SSC, S-3643, MS63 NGC, certainly a very choice-looking coin, the portrait fairly full in strike with only the highest points not fully detailed, reverse shield crisply struck but with some faint mint-made adjustments, the digits of the date bold, a small black alloy streak on each side, the surfaces generally mark free and glistening with luster beneath premium russet and golden blue patina and having some lighter golden iridescence. All in all, one of the finest SSC-hallmarked halfcrowns we can recall seeing. Struck from silver sent to the mint by the South Seas Company following its financial collapse, a significant moment in British history as the first stock-market bubble. Unlike the case of the SSC shillings, no hoard has ever come to light of sixpences, halfcrowns or crowns bearing this distinctive hallmark. Rare in this wonderful state of preservation! From The Estate of John C. Hugon.
