George I Crown 1723-SSC, S-3640, Decimo edge, MS63 Millennia Collection NGC, Choice UNC -- in fact, exceptionally choice with a wonderful portrait and fully struck reverse shield as well as being boldly detailed on all letters of the legends and the digits of the date, which are as sharp as is ever seen on any silver coins of this era, the surfaces close to perfect in terms of lacking abrasions with a single light scuff behind King George's head, a cartwheel luster evident beneath the rich bluish gray patina with reddish golden hues. The coin has not changed even slightly since it was last auctioned (as described then by the same cataloguer writing it up now). As they like to say in Old Blighty, "virtually As Struck" and in this case that means nearly a gem. "Nearly" or not, "virtually" notwithstanding, this remains the best South Seas Company crown we have seen and is truly a numismatic treasure of the early 18th century. Rare in this grade. Sold for $7,500 four years ago as Lot 366 of the Millennia Collection. Worth more today? It will be if two or more collectors realize how great this coin is in the pantheon of British (or world) crowns. From The Estate of John C. Hugon.
