George II Proof Shilling 1746, S-3704, Old Head, PR65 Terner PCGS, a fabulous specimen from a famous collection (so noted on the grading insert), full crisp impression of the dies, gem surfaces, and especially rich bluish mauve iridescent toning. This coin's quality speaks for itself, and the price realized for this beauty will be commensurate with its state of preservation, so instead of writing more accolades we will comment on the design and the rarity of this coin. The Old Head portrait was conceived and engraved by J.S. Tanner and it incorporates the curious lion's head for the chevron on the king's armored shoulder. If the collector studies the various bust styles he will discover that the lion seems to age along with the king, who is portrayed on this proof coin with a laurel wreath and long flowing locks (which indicate a periwig). The reverse legend spells out, in Latin abbreviations, the monarch's numerous German and English titles. On currency issues, the letters of the obverse and reverse legends are bifurcated (curve in at their bases), a classic feature of 18th-century coinage. On the proofs, however, the bifurcation disappears and the letters are flat at their bases and sharply serifed. Proofs of 1746 exist for the four denominations of silver coins issued at the time, and are all from the first sets made in proof for sale to collectors by the Royal Mint. It is generally believed that just 100 sets were coined. This gem shilling is among the very finest survivors of that meager proof issue, and is a treasure, pure and simple, a numismatic treasure of the finest quality and with superb eye-appeal. Our estimate reflects a premium over the normally seen examples, but we note that an uncertified example fetched about $5,600 in a DNW sale in London in 2010. This is not the same coin, for it was long held in the Terner Collection. From The Estate of John C. Hugon.

Estimate: 3000.00-3500.00 USD
