George III Proof Halfpenny 1770, S-3774, Peck-895 (copper, rare), PR65 BN NGC, a terrific early proof copper with reflective or mirrored surfaces of a rich chocolate color, and a deeply detailed strike. Very choice. A few small carbon deposits on reverse. Edge should be plain, struck using a steel collar band, but it is not visible in the slab. Proofs of this, the first date of the type struck at London, called the 1st Issue, are characterized by their rims having long bold denticles and by being struck on flans specially polished but also of slightly larger diameter than the currency issues (30.5 mm vs 29 mm). Most known examples are also struck a bit off-center on reverse, as seen on this specimen. We will give a fairly broad estimate; at the low end the coin is a bargain, at the high end a reasonable value for such an exceptionally nice proof of the 18th century. From The Estate of John C. Hugon.
