George III Proof copper Bank Dollar 1804, KM-Tn1a, ESC-152, L&S-61, scarce, PR67 BN NGC, a truly splendid example of this type, deeply mirrored with a full proof impression of the dies, and the color nothing less than "pure chocolate block." The finest copper proof we have handled of the Bank of England's so-called Britannia Dollar, denominated in silver as 5 Shillings and struck during the Napoleon War, when specie was in short supply and the Royal Mint issued no regular silver coinage. It was also during this time that the ages-old mint inside the walls of the Tower of London was about to be replaced by the Tower Hill Mint that would be located just outside the walls of the Tower, and the new facility would soon be striking a variety of New Coinage types for George III, using coining presses obtained from Boulton and Watt's manufactory in Birmingham. Boulton's Soho Mint of course had counterstamped the Spanish dollars needed so badly earlier in wartime and then supplemented and finally replaced by the Bank Dollars, of which copper proofs were doubtless intended as samples to gain the minting contract. Most of the best survivors are probably restrikes made about 1828 by W.J. Taylor and are highly prized today. Many choice examples exist, but few can touch the superb quality of the specimen offered for sale in this lot.

Estimate: 5500.00-6500.00 USD
