Victoria pattern 1 Cent 1846, Smith's decimal type by Marrian & Gausby, Peck-2086, copper, coin-rotation die alignment, PR63 RB NGC, a pleasingly choice example of this private pattern deemed VR by Peck, the fields highly reflective mirrors, the color a fairly bright reddish brown. Peck notes that Shorthouse restruck a number of Marrian & Gausby pieces but not the Cent, and so this piece may well be an original strike. The die alignment is correct for an original. But no one can say positively that earlier restrikes did not occur. The rims are high with inner beading. The edge is plain but striated, indicating that a steel band was used for the collar. There is slight evidence of the dies used to strike this piece being aged. Nevertheless, here is a late Victorian copper pattern that is both seldom seen and very pleasingly preserved. Peck's rarity rating may be understated.

Estimate: 1000.00-1200.00 USD
