George VI Pattern Matte Proof Sixpence 1937, standard reverse as S-4084, obverse portrait and legends replaced by the word "MODEL" and so a test piece struck to show the reverse die work. Graded Matte PR63 by NGC but this is a lovely specimen that is ever so close to As Struck state, with light gray toning. Squared-off, knife-sharp rims, plainly upset on obverse without beading. Possibly related to the extremely rare Matte Proofs of this date, of which a celebrated set sold not long ago in London for a staggering price. Unlisted in any reference we can locate, and possibly unique.
Estimate: 4000.00-5000.00 USD
