Republic gold Kraalpond blank ND (1900), Hern-Z55, rimless, NGC certified without grade but noted as "EX: GEORGE DE BRUIN." A pleasant example, without damage, of this emergency coinage of the Boer War, when the Pretoria Mint was temporarily closed. There seems to be no official explanation of how these managed to "escape" the mint but wartime casts a long shadow and troops need to be paid, fed, entertained, and so on. We have located few pieces sold at auction that are as pleasing as this pedigreed specimen.
Estimate: 2000.00-2500.00 USD
