ALBIN (AL ligate), togate figure standing left before lighted, sprinkling ox sacrificial standing right; all on rocky outcrop. Crawford 372/1. Sydenham 745. Postumia 7. Lightly toned. Very fine. From The Mayflower Collection. This popular reverse type celebrates the sacrifice of a bull to Diana on the eve of the Battle of Lake Regillus (ca. 498 BC) by the moneyer's ancestor, A. Postumius Albus. The sacrifice reportedly took place in the goddess's temple on the Aventine and was performed to secure Rome's domination over the neighboring cities of Latium, an event which had been foretold by the augurs during the dedication of the temple. The paucity of records from this early date in Roman history, however, provides us little information about the battle, which may be entirely legendary.
