Republic 50 Centavos 1871 -1897 Date Set, KM-37 50 Centavos 1871. KM-51: 1883 without P and thus the actual issue of that calendar year, 1883 with P prominently punched into wreath at 3 o'clock of obverse (this "P" punch probably indicates the dies were used to produce this around 1895- 1900), 1884, 1885 (truly lovely example for this date with much soft muted luster and relatively well struck; perhaps the nicest we have seen), 1886/5 (only VF but looks lustrous), 1887/5 (usual heavily repunched date; backside die worn out by this year), 1896 with P as always on this RARE date (the P is clearly visible on the pedestal of the backside). The frontside die, upon which the date 1896 is clearly and boldly punched, is one from a decade earlier which should have been scrapped; if it had a "P" also punched onto it, that area is worn smooth. Dana sensed "original luster in places" on this pathetic production. The mint may have realized its folly in producing the large denominations that year (it quit production of the silver Peso with pathetic production that same year) but that did not keep it from striking an 1897 using the very same worn-out backside dies with the prominent "P" punched on the pedestal, and finally the aforementioned 1897 (with frontside nicely detailed for the year). The grades technically range from Good to AEF but more instructive is to say that most are above par for that specific year. Sold as is, NO Return. Dana Roberts Collection and Study Group.

Estimate: 1000.00-1500.00 USD
