Italian States AD 1166 -1873 Superior Group, Two dozen interesting hand-picked pre-unification items comprise an attractive assortment for any aspiring collector of this lengthy series. The only gold piece is a Sicily Oncia of 1735 with a crudely rendered bust of Carlo III and a Phoenix arising. An attractive and appealing Testone of Maria Sfarza (1466 -1476) features a Renaissance portrait. A Naples Groat of Robert of Anjou (1309 -1343) is quite attractive as is a Naples Coronato of Ferdinand I of Aragon. The same king Ferdinand (1474 -1524) is named on a Real from Messina in Sicily. A total of 19 silver coins include two full crown size issues. There are four copper pieces, one being a Doppio of William II from about AD 1166, while the most curious may be a piece represented to be the one of the first "tokens" of Europe ! It was made of "bell metal" in Venice in 1613 by a chemical and craft merchant Sosso & Zerbi; that cuarto is catalogued by Neumann as #29076. Overall we believe the quality of these items is easily average for such issues and probably superior in many cases. Sold as is, NO Return. Dana Roberts Collection and Study Group.
