Caria, Stratonicaea. Ca. 88-85 B.C. AR drachm (15 mm, 2.04 g, 12 h). First Mithradatic War issue. Hierokles, magistrate. Head of Hekate right, wearing crescent-tipped crown / Nike alighting right, holding wreath and palm branch; IЄPOKΛH above, grain ear to lower right; all within incuse square. Meadows, Group 3 var. (unlisted magistrate); SNG Keckman -; SNG von Aulock -. Toned with minor roughness. Very fine. Extremely rare and possibly unpublished for this magistrate.

Struck on a reduced standard to match the Roman quinarius, Meadow's Group 3 coins were struck during the First Mithradatic War to finance the resistance to Mithradates. Sulla greatly praised the city for their efforts (see Meadows pp. 121ff).
