Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 B.C. Æ unit (18 mm, 5.97 g, 2 h). Uncertain Macedonian mint. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress; behind, Φ / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Club, quiver and bow. Price 260. Very rare issue with obverse control letter. Dark greenish-black patina, light porosity. Fine style. Choice very fine.

There are a few bronze units of Alexander the Great with Herakles / Club and bow-case types that have the control mark on the obverse, such as on this coin with the letter Φ. All are very rare and the engraving is often of superior style, such as is the case here.
