The Bunkyu Era only spanned three years, and fell during the reign of Emperor Komei. He was the last Japanese Emperor who had more than one era name (nengo) during a single ruling term. In total he reigned during seven era names from 1846 to 1867. The Emperor's family included six children, but the future Emperor Meiji was the only one to survive childhood.
