NETHERLANDS: AR medal (45.31g), 1650, 62mm " Attack on Amsterdam " cast silver medal by Dirck van Rijswijk, HEER U HANT VERWINT HET AL EN GEEFT ONS VREDE, Peace facing the sun's rays with flag pole in hand resting on right shoulder, image on flag appears to be a branch with leaves and a bird figure. She is standing on a fallen solider in full armor who has fallen on his shield. Her left hand is holding a cornucopia (horn of plenty). Beneath the horn of plenty are two spears draped in cloth. Under the second spear is the head of a three point spear facing right. To her left is the end of a cannon. Lying upright on the cannon barrel are five spears, with what looks like a ram rod next to them. To the left of the ram rod is the cannon wheel. A drum is next to the wheel. Above the drum are four spears and a battle axe // T'HERSTELLEN VANDE WACHTI INT IVBELIAER VOLBRACH WERT HIER BY GEDACHT, near the top left is an arm and hand protruding from the clouds holding a flag, on the top right is an arm and hand protruding from the clouds holding five arrows. In the center appears to be five towers surrounded by trees and flanked by two windmills which are centered by what looks like a pillared retaining wall. Below this wall in the water are six boats paddled by oarsmen, light nicks and digs, VF. The Attack on Amsterdam in July 1650 was part of a planned coup d'état by stadtholder William II, Prince of Orange, to break the power of the regenten in the Dutch Republic, especially the County of Holland. The coup failed because the army of the Frisian stadtholder William Frederick, Prince of Nassau-Dietz, got lost on the way to Amsterdam in the rainy night of 29 to 30 July. It was discovered, and once the city had been warned, it had enough time to prepare for an attack. The attempted coup made the House of Orange extremely unpopular for a lengthy period of time, and was one of the main reasons for the origins of the First Stadtholderless Period (1650-1672); this piece appears to be a later casting, perhaps made in the 18th century.
