Aeolis, Myrina. Trajan. A.D. 98-117. AE 17 (17.00 mm, 1.81 g, 2 h). [ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑΤ]ΟΡΑ ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟΝ, laureate head of Trajan right / [ΘЄA]N PΩ-MHN [ΜΥΡΙ], laureate and draped bust of Roma right, hair rolled. RPC III 1916; SNG France 2073. VF, struck off-center on irregular flan - much legend missing.
From the Tom Buggey Collection.
Similar to pieces which have the ΘЄAN PΩ-MHN legend and Roma head right from Pergamum, one from Smyrna and one from Magnesia ad Sipylum. RPC I does not list this reverse for any other city. The portion of the obverse legend on-flan is like no legend from any of the above which use the Roma reverse - The portrait looks a little like a Julio-Claudian, but again, what's legible of the legend fits none of themMost of the Roma reverses have an allegorical personification of the Senate, the People, etc - almost none have an emperor or other Imperial portrait - this one's a puzzle!
